Here goes nothing…

A dream of mine has always been to be a play-by-play announcer or a public address announcer, ideally in hockey. I’ve dabbled in both, doing play-by-play for a local junior hockey team’s local access broadcasts while I was a senior in high school, and then doing PA announcing for that same team the year prior, in addition to doing it again for a different local junior team in 2008-09.

My career path and the experience I gained in college took me away from that path because writing about sports is a lot easier than commentating, especially in college. I keep that passion burning with my podcast. As MMA rose up, I thought, “Hey, maybe I could do some ring announcing, that’d be fun.” And then I started exploring some other options, but doing play-by-play had gone on the back burner to a certain extent.

Until now.

As many of you know, I love professional wrestling. It’s a passion of mine. I watch it, I write about it, I love it. As I explored the local independent scene and began to learn more about it, I decided to fill out the contact form on the website of the big local promotion here and see if, on the off chance, they happened to be in the market for a play-by-play guy or a ring announcer.

A month or two passed, I can’t quite remember, with no response. That was fine because I wasn’t really expecting anything. Who am I, ya know? But about a week ago, I got an email reply in my inbox. Much to my surprise, they were going to be more proactive in broadcasting their shows. They’re just finishing up editing their January show, I’m told, and are looking to put a play-by-play track on it.

So after trading some emails back and forth, including me sending along the only demo of play-by-play I have, they’re going to give me a shot calling this show.

That’s right. I’m getting a shot at professional wrestling play-by-play. See, this is nice in theory, and since I thought there was really no chance of it happening when I sent that email, I wasn’t too worried. But now that it looks like it’s actually going to become a reality? I’m scared s#$%less.

Random Musings – Feb. 14, 2013

Posted: February 14, 2013 in Random Musings

I read a story today in the Free Press about a man who is caring for his wife of 65 years. She is in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and is fading. It really tugged at my heart strings. Before I met V, things like this would tug at my heart strings, certainly, but as I’ve now found, stories like this yank those same heart strings completely out these days. It’s the second such story like this in a week that’s really gotten to me. Earlier this week, a very talented former co-worker of mine at wrote about a couple trying to overcome the woman’s brutal rape.

Now that I’m engaged, now that I’ll be married in less than seven months, these things get to me because I can’t even imagine how they’d affect me if I was placed in their situations. Please read both stories. They are emotional, no doubt, but need to be read.

On a lighter note, Redbox sent over a promo code for a free rental, so we watched Here Comes The Boom last night. It’s an MMA-themed movie, but would be great for anybody. I laughed a whole lot. It was predictable, as V pointed out to me, but I loved it nonetheless. Some legit LOL moments, and how can a movie with THE FONZ go wrong?

This just came into my head because of prior word usage, but one of my favorite new TV shows has to be Legit on FX. Is anybody else watching this? It is absolute gold. Unfortunately, I feel like it’s one of those shows that’s going to be canned after one season because I don’t really hear anyone else talking about it. Which is sad, because I love it.

It stars comedian Jim Jeffries and revolves around him, his best friend, Steve, and his friend’s brother, Billy, who is bound to a wheelchair due to Muscular Dystrophy. Of course, in the first episode comedy ensues when they break Billy out of the nursing home and attempt to get him first experience with a female. I think it’s about 4-5 episodes in now and, outside of New Girl, might be my favorite show on TV. It’s awesome.

Think Progress has a pretty good take on the show.

There’s a lot of good TV out there now, but Legit is a great replacement for any shows that might only have short seasons (For me, they are The League and Boardwalk Empire).

You know what annoys me? The fact that the last two deodorants and the last two shampoos I’ve used have been discontinued. I’m kinda picky, so this annoys me, especially in the deodorant category. V and I spent about 15 minutes at Target yesterday sniffing other scents, and none compare, or are even that good, really. I am not pleased by this. But I’ll keep searching to see if my current deodorant is still in stock somewhere and grab up a few to at least delay the inevitable.

Update 2/15: Went to a Target near work for some socks, but decided to check there for the deodorant. They had them! And they were on clearance. So I bought all three they had for $2.98 each. So I can at least put off that one for a while now.

That’s all.

An introduction…

Welcome Back!

I’m back.

It’s been a long time since I blogged and since I’m not writing as much as in the past, I decided to start this up and see blogging could take the place of some of that.

Here’s what I’m hoping to accomplish in this blog:

For one, life updates is going to be a big one. I’ve got a new job. I’m getting married later this year. I’ve got a dog. So obviously there will be some things to talk about. With so many people being out of the Michigan area these days, this is probably the best way to go about it.

I’ll also be writing about MMA and sports in general, and I’ll be posting links to whatever I’m up to elsewhere, including my works on the HVAC industry, the world of professional wrestling, or even my podcast, which is nearly 5 1/2 years old now.

Then finally, I’ll post some random musings, maybe some funny things, some things I enjoyed reading and the like.

So now that I got that out of the way, let’s get after it…
